Fixed Wireless NBN plans are set to get a speed bump in early 2024. Under NBN Co's proposal, Fixed Wireless Plus plans would be bumped from 75Mbps to 100Mbps, and get upload speeds of 20Mbps. This would effectively put them in line with NBN 100 plans, and be available to everyone on the Fixed Wireless network.

NBN Co is also planning on introducing two even faster speed tiers. The first is Fixed Wireless Fast, which was originally meant to be equivalent to an NBN 100 plan. Instead, customers should be able to expect download speeds between 200Mbps and 250Mbps. This plan should be available to 90% of the Fixed Wireless network.

Lastly, there's Fixed Wireless Superfast, which was meant to be an NBN 250 equivalent. Now, NBN Co says customers will be able to achieve download speeds of up to 400Mbps and upload speeds of up to 40Mbps. That's similar to what an uncapped 5G home internet plan can get on a good day. This should be available to 80% of the Fixed Wireless network.

These two new speed tiers are set to be available in mid-2024, provided consultation is successful.

NBN's announcement coincides with work being completed on the first set of Fixed Wireless upgrades. 16,000 homes and businesses across the Fixed Wireless footprint should now see faster download speeds during the busiest parts of the day. These upgrades have been deployed on the South Coast in New South Wales and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

As part of the upgrades, 3,200 homes and businesses in those areas are able to migrate from Satellite NBN to the Fixed Wireless network. Customers in an eligible area simply need to order a Fixed Wireless NBN plan to start the process. The chosen NBN provider will then arrange an installation appointment. The process will typically take four hours, and someone over the age of 18 will need to be there the entire time.

You can check if you're eligible for an upgrade on the NBN website.
