Telstra will increase the price of its entry-level NBN plans from July 1, off the back of upcoming NBN Co wholesale pricing changes. As part of the changes, Telstra's NBN 25 plan will jump from $85 per month to $89 per month, while its NBN 50 plan will rise by $5 to $105 per month.
This means there'll be just a $5 per month difference between Telstra's NBN 50 plan and NBN 100 plan, which will remain at $110 per month.
Telstra's two fastest NBN plans will get a little cheaper, however. NBN 250 will get a $5 price cut, bringing it down to $130 per month, while NBN 1000 is dropping from $170 per month to $150.
Here's a comparison of the old and new plans:
| Speed Tier | Old Pricing | New Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $85 per month | $89 per month |
| NBN 50 | $100 per month | $105 per month |
| NBN 100 | $110 per month | $110 per month |
| NBN 250 | $135 per month | $130 per month |
| NBN 1000 | $170 per month | $150 per month |
These pricing changes will apply to new and existing Telstra customers. Customers on a current Telstra NBN plan will be charged the new amount from their bill in July.
On Telstra's website, the telco points the finger at NBN Co for the pricing changes.
"NBN Co is increasing the price they charge us for wholesale internet and this is an important factor for the changes we’re making," said Telstra. "As a business, we’re constantly striving to balance the needs of our customers whilst ensuring we remain financially sustainable."
Since Telstra's price increase is based on changes to wholesale costs that kick in on July 1, we can expect to see a similar pattern across the industry, largely targeting NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans. Optus' NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans will see a price of $5 per month and $4 per month, respectively, taking them to $75 per month and $89 per month. iPrimus has also been emailing customers that NBN 50 plans will be getting more expensive in July.
As such, it's likely that NBN 100 plans will become a better value option for many consumers, even if they are a couple of dollars per month more expensive. Similarly, we've already seen providers like SpinTel simply stop selling NBN 50. Here's how NBN 100 plans currently compare to NBN 50, NBN 250, and NBN 1000.
After this price increase, we shouldn't see another NBN price increase until July 2025.
