- Support: 7 days a week, 7am to 12am.
Internode is a longstanding Australian internet service provider that has historically been favoured by the enthusiast market. The company's positive reputation eventually led to it being acquired by iiNet, who in turn was acquired by TPG in 2015.
While Internode may have new corporate masters the company has managed to stay in its customer's good books. Roy Morgan named it "Australia's #1 Home Broadband Provider" in its customer satisfaction survey for 2017 and 2016.
In terms of NBN, Internode has nine standard options. You can pick from three NBN speed, and after than pick from three data allowances.
These are your options for speed:
- NBN Bronze (NBN 12)
- NBN Gold (NBN 50)
- NBN Platinum (NBN 100)
And these are your options for data:
- 100GB
- 500GB
- Unlimited
100GB will be fine if you just want a basic internet plan and you're not streaming much video (especially at high resolutions), but we'd recommend 500GB for most households.
While unlimited data is essentially the industry standard (and the benchmark we've used for plan comparisons below), you can save money by opting for a lower allowance. 500GB will save you $5 per month, whereas going for 100GB will save you as much as $20 per month.
Internode internet plans are available on a 24-month contract or a month-to-month basis. If you take up a contract, you'll have your setup fee and modem fee waived. Otherwise, you're looking at a $129 setup fee for ADSL and Naked DSL plans, or a $99 for NBN. If you need a new modem, it's an extra $89 if you don't sign a contract.
Internode also offers an advanced modem - the FRITZ!Box 7490 - for "internet enthusiasts and power users". If you'd prefer this option, you'll pay $249, regardless of whether you commit to a 24-month contract.
Internode NBN 50 plans compared
Internode's unlimited NBN 50 plan is very much indicative of its place in the market; you won't pay as much as much as would you for the same plan on Telstra, but you're at the high-end of town. That being said, Internode's NBN 50 pricing is in line with what a lot of other providers are charging for the same kind of plan. Sure, some telcos will save you $10 or so a month, but you're definitely not overpaying.
Internode NBN 100 plans compared
NBN 100 is the same story as NBN 50; Internode certainly doesn't offer budget plans, but they're not as expensive as they could be.
Internode NBN 12 plans compared
NBN 12 plans are essentially the equivalent of a decent ADSL connection, so you won't really get the benefits of NBN. However, if you just want to get online and aren't too demanding an internet user, it could be an okay choice. Excluding promos, Internode is about $10 per month more than other NBN 12 plans on the market.
Internode ADSL plans compared
NBN pricing trends continue when it comes to Internode's ADSL plans; they're not the most expensive, but they're still a pricey option. It is however worth noting that you might pay extra for a "Reach" plan if you're outside of Internode's standard ADSL footprint (and have to be connected to Telstra's infrastructure). If this is the case, buying direct from Telstra is a better value option.
When it comes to Naked DSL plans (where you omit a phoneline), literally everyone is charging the same amount, although setup fees may vary. If you're looking for a no-contract Naked plan, iiNet and MyNetPhone have the lowest upfront fees, and will charge $99.95 and $99 respectively. Internode will charge you $129 upfront for Naked.
Internode Entertainment Extras: Fetch TV
If you want to bundle entertainment with your internet, Internode offers Fetch TV - a premium television service that essentially competes with Foxtel. As with Foxtel, you have the option of picking from packs that give you access to select channels.
You can add Fetch TV to your Internode broadband plan for $10 per month. This includes the Fetch TV Mini set-top box and one Premium channel pack.
Extra packs can be added for another $6 each, or alternatively, you can pay $25 per month for the set-top box and all four channel packs.
The Fetch TV Premium Channel Packs are as follows:
- Kids: The Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Nickelodeon, Nick Junior, Cartoon Network, Disney XD, Cbeebies, Zoo Moo, Baby TV
- Knowledge: National Geographic, Nat Geo People, Nat Geo Wild, BBC Knowledge, HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, BBC World News, CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg, France 24, Aljazeera, EuroNews, Channel NewsAsia, NDTV 24x7, CGTN
- Vibe: E!, Style, Fashion TV, Comedy Central, Spike, Egg Network, MTV, MTV Dance, MTV Music, ESPN, ESPN 2, Edge
- Variety: Universal Channel, 13th Street, SyFy, BBC First, BBC UKTV, TV Hits, 111 Funny, MTV Classic, Music TV
You can access these channels by using the included Fetch TV Mini set-top box. The Mini also has apps to for Netflix, Stan, and select catch-up TV channels. You do however require your own Netflix or Stan subscription.
Internode NBN phone options
Internode has a surprising number of options when it comes to making phone calls on the NBN.
Most NBN customers will get NodePhone VoIP included with their plan. Calls are charged at pay-as-you-go rates, but you can purchase credit upfront for a discount:
- $5 per month: $10 of call credit
- $10 per month: $20 of call credit
- $20 per month: $40 call credit
If you're connecting to the NBN through HFC or FTTC, you're able to take up NBN Phone which lets you keep using your current phone. NBN Phone is included with the cost of your plan, with pay-as-you-go calls. If you'd prefer a fixed spend, you can pick from these add-ons:
- Local and National Call Pack: Unlimited calls to standard Australian landlines - $10 per month
- Local, National, and Mobile Call Pack: Unlimited calls to standard Australian landlines and mobiles - $20 per month
- International Call Pack: Unlimited calls to landlines in 20 destinations - $10 per month
If you're connecting through FTTP, you can sign up to Fibre Phone, and keep your existing phone. You'll pay a $29.95 per month line rental fee, and you'll pay for calls at pay-as-you-go rates.
Internode's pay-as-you-go rates are the same as across NodePhone, NBN Phone, and Fibre Phone. They are as follows:
- Local calls: $0.18 flagfall
- Standard national calls: $0.18 flagfall
- Calls to Australian mobile numbers: $0.29 per minute
- Calls to 1300 and 13 numbers: $0.275 flagfall
- International calls: $0.15 flagfall, per minute rates vary
NodePhone customers can call other NodePhone customers for free, and Fibre Phone customers can call other Fibre Phone customers and NodePhone customers for free.
