Google today announced a new slate of hardware products, headlined by the surprise release of the Pixel 7a. The new mid-tier phone was joined by the Pixel Tablet, which is heading to Australia in June, and the Pixel Fold, which will not be available in Australia at this stage.
The Pixel 7a is Google's latest A-series handset, and maintains its predecessor's $749 price tag. It's largely based on the Pixel 7's design language, but has slightly larger bezels and a smaller display. You still get the funky camera bar, however.
The main changes this year - in addition to the requisite processor upgrade - are a bump up to a 64MP primary camera and the introduction of wireless charging. 64MP is the largest camera we've seen on a Pixel to date, and the Pixel 7a also marks the first time Google has used wireless charging in an A-series handset.
Key specifications for the Pixel 7a include a 6.1-inch 1080p+ display, Google's in-house Tensor G2 processor, 128GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and a 4,385mAh battery. On the back, you'll find the 64MP primary lens joined by a 13MP ultra-wide lens. On the front, there's a single 13MP selfie camera.
The Pixel 7a ships with Android 13, and Google is promising three years of operating system updates and five years of security patches. This will take the Pixel 7a through to Android 16.
You can pick up the Pixel 7a from today in a choice of Charcoal, Sea, or Snow. You can get it outright through Google's online store, JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, and Harvey Norman. If you'd prefer to get your Pixel 7a on a plan, Telstra and Optus are both ranging it.
The Pixel Tablet is also available to pre-order from today, but won't hit stores until June 20. In addition to being Google's first tablet since the Nexus days, the Pixel Tablet has a unique twist: it comes bundled with a charging dock that effectively turns it into a smart display.
When undocked, the Pixel Tablet is a typical Android tablet. When docked, it goes into hub mode which includes a digital photo frame and smart home controls. Naturally, you can also use Google Assistant for hands-free controls. The dock also has speakers, to give the tablet an even bigger sound.
Key specifications for the Pixel Tablet include an 11-inch display with a 1600 x 2560 resolution, Google's in-house Tensor G2 processor, up to 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and a battery said to last up to 12 hours. Both the front and rear camera measure in at 8MP. It doesn't have any cellular connectivity, however.
The Pixel Tablet will set you back $899 for a 128GB model, or $999 for 256B. It includes the dock, but if you want a second one for another room, you'll pay $189. You can get the Pixel Tablet in a choice of Porcelain and Hazel, and you'll find it at Google, JB Hi-Fi, and Telstra.
