It would take nothing short of a miracle for a television series to ever match the dizzying popularity that HBO's Game of Thrones achieved at its peak, but A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is showing promise. Its smaller-scale story and refreshingly upbeat tone have reinvigorated interest in George R.R. Martin’s body of work.

Now that the six-episode first season have officially concluded, Game of Thrones fans will be left wondering what’s next from the world of Westeros. Thanks to a recent profile of George R.R. Martin in THR (The Hollywood Reporter), we have a slightly better idea of what's being worked on, what's been shelved and why.

“Apart from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in development. The majority are prequels, and there are several in development – maybe five or six shows. And I’m not developing them alone, I’m working on them with other people. And yes, there’s a sequel or two [in the works]." - George R.R Martin, November 2025

Here’s everything currently in production, pre-production and pre-pre-production.

Be honest
How many more Game of Thrones spin-offs can you handle?

House of the Dragon Seasons 3 and 4

House of the Dragon

Where A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms highlights the dark humour and hopefulness of the Game of Thrones universe, House of the Dragon shows the world’s unrelenting cruelty. Set nearly 200 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s rise to power in Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon chronicles Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s hard-fought battle for the throne after her father, Viserys, names her heir, breaking from the tradition of exclusively male heirs.

Over the course of many years, Rhaenyra and her childhood friend Alicent Hightower– who marries Viserys in his twilight years– come to blows over who is the rightful heir to the Targaryen throne.

Where can I watch House of the Dragon?

Seasons 1 and 2 of House of the Dragon are currently streaming on HBO Max.

Season 3 is set to release on HBO Max on June 21, 2026, with season 4 already confirmed as the show's final season. Unfortunately, HBO Max is one of the more expensive streaming services on the market but there are more ways than one to find a discount.

In the meantime, check out the season 3 trailer below:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2

The next most likely A Song of Ice and Fire adaptation is probably a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

HBO has already greenlit a second season, and showrunner Ira Parker recently told THR that they were “having a lot of fun [on] season two”. Parker also confirmed that Season 2 would also be six episodes and “maybe even smaller in scope”. The show currently has the same budget as Season 1 but with inflation and larger shooting costs, it may end up being even shorter.

If that’s the case, we may actually end up getting Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms before House of the Dragon Season 4, or any other Game of Thrones spin-off, for that matter.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 is streaming on HBO Max.

Snow (or Stark?)

Most of the spin-offs that have been released or planned are prequels to the Game of Thrones series but there is at least one sequel idea that’s been floating around since 2022: the Jon Snow Happy Hour.

Initially, Jon Snow actor Kit Harington had pitched an idea about an exiled Jon Snow living with PTSD in the North. The idea was eventually shelved when HBO decided it would have been a bit too bleak (which is saying something for a Game of Thrones story).

However, the sequel series may have been resurrected in some form. In January 2026, Drops of God (Apple TV) creator Quoc Dang Tran was linked to a new sequel project that would shift focus to Arya Stark’s post-Game of Thrones adventures in Essos.

Given Arya Stark and Jon Snow’s bond, it could make sense for Jon Snow to play a part in such a series, but Kit Harington hasn’t inspired much hope in that prospect. When asked in late 2025 if he’d consider voicing the role of Jon Snow for an audiobook, Harington responded, “No, god no. I don’t wanna go anywhere near it. I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, I’m alright.”

Still, an audiobook version of the work you already did is a lot different to a HBO series that continues that character’s story (which, let’s be honest, probably pays a lot better too).

No actors have been attached to the project yet, publicly, but Quoc Dang Tran’s involvement offers a glimmer of hope that this thing might actually get off the ground, eventually.

Nine Voyages (Sea Snake)

Primal

Talk of a live-action Nine Voyages series has been brewing since 2021, over a year before the Sea Snake, Corlys Velaryon, appeared in House of the Dragon. Back then, Nine Voyages seemed further along the pipeline than any other spin-off. It even had a big TV name on board, Bruno Heller, creator of HBO’s Rome and CBS series The Mentalist.

In 2024, George R.R. Martin revealed via his blog (or NOT A BLOG) that Nine Voyages had been moved “over from live action to animation,” crediting budget constraints that would have made a live-action version “prohibitively expensive”.

Since then, it seems Nine Voyages has stayed on course. In an interview with Deadline in early 2026, HBO CEO Casey Bloys refused to comment on the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-offs, but it was suggested that animation legend Genndy Tartakovsky (Primal, Samurai Jack) would be involved. Tartakovsky is no stranger to animated prequels for beloved franchises; just see Star Wars: Clone Wars, the Cartoon Network series that preceded the tremendous success of the CGI series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

If you want a taste of Tartakovsky's style, all three seasons of Primal are streaming on HBO Max in Australia.

Ten Thousand Ships

Ten Thousand Ships is another idea that’s been around for as long as Nine Voyages. Set 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, it would follow the warrior Princess Nymeria on their journey from Essos to Dorne after suffering a devastating defeat from the Valyrian dragonlords.

In early 2024, it looked like Ten Thousand Ships had been moored by the powers that be at HBO, but later that year, George R.R. Martin rekindled some hope for the series, congratulating playwright Eboni Booth on her 2024 Pulitzer prize while simultaneously revealing he had worked with Booth on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships. Martin added, “We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.”

Aegon's Conquest (TV series or movie)

Aegon's Conquest
Aegon I Targaryen, The World of Ice & Fire

Once again, THR has the scoop on another Game of Thrones spin-off, Aegon’s Conquest.

According to THR, the series would follow Aegon I Targaryen, his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys, and each of their dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes, on their quest to subjugate the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. It would serve as an origin story for the Targaryens' longstanding rule over Westeros, and the creation of the iconic Iron Throne.

George R.R. Martin's THR profile in 2026 confirmed that the project was not only still alive, but being considered as both an HBO television series and a “Dune-sized feature film” from the Warner Bros. film team.

The Golden Empire (Yi Ti)

Yi Ti The Golden Empire

The project we know the least about is probably the animated series set in Yi Ti, tentatively titled The Golden Empire. Not just because it hasn't been discussed since George R.R. Martin confirmed it via his blog in 2022, but also because the land of Yi Ti remains a mystery to readers and Westerosi alike.

Located to the far east of Essos, Yi Ti is said to be a land of incredible wealth and large sprawling cities, inspired by Imperial China. Interestingly, the Westerosi with the most experience with Yi Ti is none other than Corlys Velaryon, who sailed there on the first of his legendary Nine Voyages aboard the Sea Snake.

We will likely get our first proper look at Yi Ti in the animated Nine Voyages series.
