NBN Co is increasing its wholesale pricing for residential plans on July 1, in line with the roadmap it published in July last year. The cheapest NBN plans will see the largest dollar shift, while faster plans are getting preferential treatment.
This rise will affect the cost of consumer NBN plans from many or most providers, though so far we’ve mostly seen planned increases on NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans, with some decreases to the faster (and less subscribed-to) NBN 250 and NBN 1000. NBN 100 plans have seen a mix of attention.
We’ve put together a table of the wholesale price rises. Note, this is what NBN Co charges internet providers and isn’t what you should expect to pay yourself.
| Wholesale NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 Basic Bundle | $12 | $12 | $0 |
| NBN 12 | $26.85 | $24.40 | $2.45 |
| NBN 25 | $28.24 | $26 | $2.24 |
| NBN 50 | $52.52 | $50 | $2.52 |
| NBN 100/20 | $57.22 | $55 | $2.22 |
| NBN 100/40 | $60.22 | $58 | $2.22 |
| NBN 250 | $62.22 | $60 | $2.22 |
| NBN 1000 | $72.22 | $70 | $2.22 |
While the dollar difference between the slower and faster plans isn’t significant, the percentage increase sometimes is. And we’re already seeing this play out in upcoming changes to the plans from several providers.
NBN 12 plans will be hit hardest thanks to a roughly 10% increase, with NBN 25 not far behind at 8.6%. NBN 12 consumer plans were already often as or more expensive than NBN 25 plans from internet providers, so we expect this trend to continue.
NBN 50 plans have the highest dollar increase, which works out to roughly 5% up on the previous year. This speed tier is still the one most used by Australians by a significant margin.
Once we get to NBN 100 and up, the story changes. The faster residential NBN plans will all go up by $2.22 per month, for a decreasing percentage versus the previous year each time. NBN 100/20 and NBN 100/40 go up by 4% and 3.8%, respectively. NBN 250 jumps 3.7%, and NBN 1000 by only 3.2%.
The only real good news is for the 'NBN 12 Basic Bundle', the price for which will remain $12. This plan is intended for people who still want a home phone, but have no real use for the internet.
These wholesale price adjustments will of course lead to higher prices for consumer NBN plans, but by how much depends on the telco in question. Some providers are already reaching out to customers or publishing their upcoming price lists. But not all have been so proactive.
NBN price increases from internet providers
Not all NBN providers have announced price increases yet, but we expect to see them across the market, though not necessarily for all speed tiers. We're even seeing some price drops for NBN 250 and NBN 1000.
Below are the confirmed price changes from Optus, Telstra, Aussie Broadband, Dodo, Exetel, Superloop, and iPrimus, which are among the more popular telcos to have announced details.
Telstra NBN price changes
Telstra is increasing the cost of its NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans on July 1, while lowering the price of its NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans. Its NBN 100 plans have no set price changes at this stage.
| NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $89 | $85 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $105 | $100 | $5 increase |
| NBN 250 | $130 | $135 | $5 decrease |
| NBN 1000 | $150 | $170 | $20 decrease |
The NBN 50 price rise of $5 is about double the $2.52 wholesale increase from NBN Co, but is bang on 5% (the same percentage change as the wholesale price). The $4 bump in NBN 25 pricing is also higher than the $2.24 wholesale increase, but is only a 4.7% boost (vs. 8.6% of wholesale).
The cheaper prices for NBN 250 and NBN 1000 are interesting. NBN Co’s wholesale pricing for both plans is going up by $2.22 per month, but Telstra is lowering its monthly fees by $5 and $20, respectively.
Optus NBN price increases
Only two of Optus’ NBN speed tiers have planned price increases: NBN 25 and NBN 50 – though the latter can be subscribed to as either an ‘Everyday’ plan or a more expensive ‘Family Entertainer’ plan that comes with extra perks.
In May, the telco also dropped the price of its Ultrafast NBN 1000 plans by $20 per month.
| NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $75 | $70 | $5 increase |
| NBN 50 (Everyday) | $89 | $85 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 (Family Entertainer) | $109 | $105 | $4 increase |
| NBN 1000 (Everyday) | $129 | $149 | $20 decrease |
| NBN 1000 (Family Entertainer) | $149 | $165 | $20 decrease |
Optus’ NBN 50 Family Entertainer plan offers a $10 discount for the first six months, after which the price increases to those listed above.
These price changes are pretty much in line with Telstra’s, though the pricing change for NBN 25 and NBN 50 is switched. Once again, these shifts are higher than NBN Co’s wholesale price increases of $2.24 for NBN 25 and $2.52 for NBN 50.
So far, Optus has announced the new pricing is set for 'early July', with no exact date.
Aussie Broadband NBN price changes
Aussie Broadband is increasing the prices for four of its residential, fixed-line plans: NBN 12, NBN 25, NBN 50 and its somewhat unique NBN 75 product. There are no planned increases or decreases for NBN 100 or faster plans.
| NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 | $69 | $65 | $4 increase |
| NBN 25 | $79 | $75 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $89 | $85 | $4 increase |
| NBN 75 |
$92 | $89 | $3 increase |
The increases are roughly in line with what we're seeing from other carriers, but are still above the wholesale price hikes from NBN. The lack of price increase for NBN 100 plans and up is a positive, but perhaps not as widely useful, given NBN 50 is still the most common plan speed for Australians.
After the change, Aussie Broadband's NBN 100/20 plan will be only $6 more expensive per month than its NBN 50 plan, and $3 more than its NBN 75 plan.
Aussie Broadband's NBN price increases will go live on July 11.
Dodo NBN price changes
Dodo’s new pricing will kick in on July 3. Along with its Fixed-Line (FL) plans, there will also be adjustments to some Fixed Wireless (FW) pricing.
| NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 15 (FL and FW) | $58.90 | $55 | $3.90 increase |
| NBN 25 (FL and FW) | $68.90 | $65 | $3.90 increase |
| NBN 50 (FL and FW) | $83.90 | $80 | $3.90 increase |
| NBN 100 | $88.90 | $85 | $3.90 increase |
| NBN 250 | $98.90 | $110 | $11.10 decrease |
For each of its residential NBN plans from NBN 100 and down, Dodo is increasing its monthly fees by $3.90 per month. For NBN 25 and NBN 50, this is a bit less than what we’re seeing from Optus and Telstra, but neither of those telcos has announced price rises for their most basic plans (normally NBN 12, rather than Dodo's NBN 15) or the NBN 100 speed tier.
The $11.10 drop in Dodo’s NBN 250 plan is nice to see, though this speed tier is a less common choice for consumers, as it's only available to those who have an HFC or FTTP connection.
Superloop NBN price changes
Superloop is increasing the price of four of its NBN plans on July 3: NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100/20, and NBN 100/40. Its NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans will keep their current pricing.
Of the plans with the price rises, NBN 50 is seeing the smallest increase, going up just $2 per month. NBN 25 and NBN 100/20 are both increasing by $4 per month, and NBN 100/40 by a hefty $6.
| NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $69 | $65 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $81 | $79 | $2 increase |
| NBN 100/20 | $89 | $85 | $4 increase |
| NBN 100/40 | $95 | $89 | $6 increase |
It's worth mentioning Superloop, like many providers, offer introductory discounts. The above figures refer to the ongoing monthly costs once the discount has ended.
Exetel NBN price changes
Exetel is taking a slightly different approach. While its NBN 25 plan is going up by $4 (pretty standard), it's only increasing the ongoing price of its NBN 50 plan by $1 per month.
There's no increase for its NBN 100/20 plan (also pretty standard), but NBN 100/40 is going up a full $6 per month.
It's worth noting Exetel has a six-month introductory discount period, after which the price goes up to an ongoing standard fee. We've used the ongoing costs in the table below, rather than the intro discounts.
| NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 | $63.99 | $70 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $79.99 | $78.99 | $1 increase |
| NBN 100/40 | $94.99 | $88.99 | $6 increase |
Exetel's NBN 250 plan will also not see any pricing changes, and the telco doesn't offer an NBN 1000 plan. New prices will go live on July 3.
iPrimus NBN price changes
iPrimus' NBN new NBN pricing goes live on July 3, adding $4 to the monthly cost of three Fixed Line NBN plans – NBN 25, NBN 50 and NBN 100/20 – and two of its Fixed Wireless plans – Fixed Wireless Standard and Fixed Wireless Plus. At the same time, it will be decreasing the cost of its NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans by $6 per month.
| NBN plan | Upcoming price | Old price | Price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 25 (FL and FW) | $74 | $70 | $4 increase |
| Fixed Wireless Plus (30/4) | $84 | $80 | $4 increase |
| NBN 50 | $84 | $80 | $4 increase |
| NBN 100/20 | $94 | $90 | $4 increase |
| NBN 250 | $104 | $110 | $6 decrease |
| NBN 1000 | $124 | $130 | $6 decrease |
The price increases for NBN 50 and below are similar to other NBN providers, but the increase to NBN 100/20 is notable, given some of the competition aren't changing the price for this speed tier. The $6 decrease for NBN 250 and NBN 1000 certainly isn't unwelcome, but these plans are far less commonly subscribed to than the slower options and aren't even available on most NBN technologies.
Plans from other NBN providers will get more expensive soon
NBN Co’s wholesale increases don’t kick in until July 1, so there's still time for NBN providers to announce price changes, though hopefully only if they're active from later in July or after. WhistleOut also contacted TPG, iiNet, Vodafone, Tangerine, and More about the issue, but they were unable to share unannounced pricing information at time of writing.
If we haven't outlined the price changes for your provider above, keep an eye on your inbox or texts for notifications from your internet provider.
It's worth noting that changing NBN providers likely won't spare you from an eventual price rise, but opting for a cheaper plan can still save you in the long run. Below are the cheapest NBN plans in our database right now. Keep in mind, the prices for many NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans are likely to go up in the near future. And the same is true for some NBN 100 plans.
The next NBN wholesale price increase (after July 1, 2024) isn't scheduled until July 2025.
Update 24/06: Added additional price rise information for Aussie Broadband, iPrimus, Superloop, and Exetel
5G home internet can be a fast and often cheaper alternative to the NBN. Here are some 5G home internet plans with maximum download speeds of 100Mbps, the same as an NBN 100 plan:
