NBN Co has released new wholesale prices, which will see most NBN plans get more expensive from July 1.
These are part of an annual pricing review and are in line with the NBN's Special Access Undertaking, which it must follow to ensure that its pricing is fair and transparent.
As part of the Special Access Undertaking accepted by the ACCC in 2023 NBN Co's price increase is limited to no more than the change in the consumer price index (CPI).
As such, this year's increase is adjusted to the CPI measured over 12 months to December 31, 2024. This means the wholesale price of NBN plans will increase by between $0 and $1.71 per month.
Here's a look at the specific changes:
| Wholesale NBN plan | New price | Old price | Price increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBN 12 Basic Bundle | $12.01 | $12.01 | No change |
| NBN 12 | $33.47 | $32.57 | $0.90 |
| NBN 25 | $34.64 | $33.96 | $0.68 |
| NBN 50 | $55.19 | $53.59 | $1.60 |
| NBN 100/20 | $58.53 | $57.22 | $1.31 |
| NBN 100/40 | $61.53 | $60.22 | $1.31 |
| NBN 250 | $63.93 | $62.22 | $1.71 |
| NBN 1000 | $73.93 | $72.22 | $1.71 |
Prices are increasing less than they did last year where the largest change was a $2.52 increase on NBN 50 plans. The wholesale price of every other plan was increased by at least $2.
It's important to note that wholesale prices are what NBN Co charges internet providers, not what you should expect to pay as a household.
Most providers last year increased the cost of plans by at least double the wholesale price change. This meant increases of at least $4 across a range of plans.
But providers can also choose not to pass the increases along to customers. Last year, several providers actually decreased the cost of their faster NBN plans, such as the NBN 250 and NBN 1000 speed tiers.
We're expecting to see NBN providers announce price increases between now and July 1 when the price increases will take effect. Exactly how much prices will go up by will go up or down of course, depends on the provider.
Chief Customer Offcier at NBN Co, Anna Perrin said "We encourage people to regularly check with their NBN provider for specific details about any changes to their bill and ensure they are on the right plan for their needs and budget.”
We can't promise you'll be spared from potential price increases, but you can at least find a saving today by comparing your options.
