What we love
- Competitively priced plans
- Offers NBN and mobile bundling option
- Good support pathways
What could be improved
- NBN 25 and NBN 50 speeds below standard
- Limited on extras
Overall:
G’day there, cobber! It doesn’t get any truer-bluer than naming a telecommunications company after what’s, arguably, Australia’s most favourite word: maaate. Ahem. But while MATE offers a handful of SIM-only plans, this particular provider is renowned for its NBN plans. MATE’s NBN offering starts at NBN 25 and steps up through all the major increments to NBN 250.

MATE NBN plans: Value
Many providers in our comparison engine try to encourage new sign-ups by offering an initial period of promotional pricing. MATE isn’t one of those providers, and while that might read like a negative, it doesn’t matter for us when it comes to appraising overall value as we use typical monthly pricing.
By ignoring any short-lived promo pricing and focusing on the regular monthly fee compared to the self-reported typical evening download speeds, we can have a better look at ongoing plan value. MATE does, however, offer internet and mobile bundling options to help its customers save money. But more on that later.
Below are how MATE’s NBN 25 plan compares to other providers from our comparison engine:
And here’s how MATE’s NBN 50 offering looks in comparison to its peers:
For the fastest NBN speed tier available to most homes, check out how MATE’s NBN 100 plan compares to other providers:
Finally, most Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) homes and all Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) homes may want to consider MATE’s NBN 250 plan:
MATE offers very competitive monthly pricing across all its NBN speed tiers, however, it lands middle of the pack for value. While MATE is still one of the average-priced plans for NBN 50 and NBN 100, you can nab a slightly cheaper plan from several other providers that offer faster typical evening speeds.
When it comes to its NBN 250 plans, MATE is now the most affordable plan but it comes at a cost. At the time of writing, it's worth noting its download speeds, in this speed tier, are one of the slowest available.
Typical evening speeds refer to the NBN download speeds you can expect during the busiest hours of the day -typically between 7:00pm and 11:00pm - due to congestion.
Because of the way the NBN is designed, just paying for an NBN 100 plan doesn’t guarantee you’ll get those speeds the entire time. If you want great speeds during peak hours, you’ll want to look for a provider that reports high typical evening speeds.

All of MATE’s NBN plans are no-contract offerings with unlimited data that let you BYO modem to keep costs low. If you need an NBN-compatible modem, it costs $165 at sign-up for a preconfigured TP-Link VX230v modem-router.
If you’d rather try before you’re fully invested, MATE also offers a one-month risk-free guarantee, which equates to a full refund of your plan fee if you’re not completely satisfied.
MATE NBN plans: Support
We know that support experiences can change a whole lot between people: one person may have a fantastic support experience, and another might have a terrible one from the same provider. That’s why we don’t factor this in when evaluating provider support. Instead, we focus on the number of support pathways available to customers and use that as a guide for how much they’re willing to invest in supporting users.
If you’re with MATE and things go wrong, there are a few key support avenues to pursue. Here’s how MATE fares next to other providers:

The main perk that MATE has going for it is its bundle discounts. This means you need to be a MATE mobile customer to take advantage of those combined savings. Customers can merge their mobile and internet bills into one and get a $10 per month discount on their total bill. Select MATE plans have 5G on a trial basis, but only its most expensive plan has 5G connectivity as permanent feature at this stage.
