Origin Broadband NBN Plans Review: The Verdict
Origin Broadband plans aren't cheap and they're light on extras, but if you don't balk at the price, you can invest in an NBN plan that has fast download speeds.
What we love
- Great download speeds
- Internet/energy bundle discount
- Multiple support options
What could be improved
- Expensive NBN plans
- Light on meaningful extras
Overall:
At WhistleOut, we're no strangers to multifaceted providers. Kogan sells online wares alongside mobile and NBN plans. Both Coles and Woolworths let you shop for groceries and mobile plans. And now Origin is the latest provider to branch away from its core role as an energy retailer to also sell some telecommunications on the side, offering plans from NBN 25 up to NBN 1000.
Let's take a look at all of Origin Broadband's NBN plans before we dive into the analysis:
Origin Broadband NBN plans: Value
While we love promotional pricing in our monthly picks of the best NBN plans, our plan analysis focuses instead on typical pricing rather than short-lived discounts. We take this typical monthly fee and divide it by an NBN provider's self-reported typical evening download speeds to determine value. The result is what we use to compare the overall ongoing value between NBN providers.
Origin Broadband follows the increasingly popular trend of ignoring the bare-bolts NBN 12 speed tier in favour of the more practical NBN 25 speed tier. Here's how Origin's NBN 25 plan stacks up next to the provider's top competitors in our NBN comparison engine:
Here is how Origin's NBN 50 plans compare:
And here's how NBN 100 compares:
All Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) homes and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) abodes can sign up for NBN 250 plans. Here is how Origin's NBN 250 plans stack up against the competition:
The ISP also offers NBN 1000 plans, available to all FTTP and HFC connections:
Across the board, Origin Broadband offers some of the fastest NBN plans available with unlimited data, but you'll have to pay for those speeds. The value is more apparent when you buy into the faster NBN speed tiers. For NBN 25 plans, though, the 25Mbps parity that Origin Broadband offers is standard among providers. You can find cheaper typical pricing with the same speeds from Tangerine, SpinTel, Kogan, TPG, Dodo and iiNet. Belong is cheaper, too, but it has an upfront fee if you choose not to BYO modem.
This pricey/parity trend continues for Origin Broadband's NBN 50 plan, which offers 50Mbps download speeds but so does most of the provider's peers. Only Telstra is more expensive, but you'll find cheaper pricing for the same 50Mbps download speeds from SpinTel, Tangerine, Dodo, MyRepublic, Kogan, MATE, TPG, iiNet, Aussie Broadband, Optus and Vodafone.
Origin Broadband starts to set itself apart from NBN 100 onwards, where it offers great 99Mbps download speeds with its plan. The only cheaper options are from SpinTel and Optus, while More NBN and Aussie Broadband are still the most expensive options, all of which have below 100Mbps download speeds.
For eligible HFC and FTTP homes where speed matters most, Origin Broadband offers some fantastic download speeds. Origin's NBN 250 plan has 244Mbps evening download speeds, making it just slower than Southern Phone and Telstra's top NBN 250 plans but matching Aussie Broadband for speed.
If you're in an eligible home and want an NBN 1000 plan, Origin Broadband boasts very respectable 600Mbps download speeds. For context, Origin's cheaper peers in our database tend to advertise download speeds of 450Mbps or slower. Superloop does have a less-common NBN 500 plan, which advertises 500Mbps download speeds, but it has a 3TB download cap. The only cheaper NBN 1000 plan that offers 600Mbps download speeds is the one from Aussie Broadband.
What are typical evening speeds?
Typical evening speeds refer to the NBN download speeds you can expect during the busiest hours of the day—typically between 7pm and 11pm—due to congestion.
Because of the way the NBN is designed, just paying for an NBN 100 plan doesn't guarantee you'll get those speeds the entire time. If you want great speeds during peak hours, you'll want to look for a provider that reports high typical evening speeds.

All of Origin Broadband's NBN plans come with unlimited data and are month-to-month offerings without contracts that let you change your plan at any time with no fee. While Origin's plans encourage you to BYO modem, you can purchase an Origin Home Gateway modem separately.
Origin Broadband NBN plans: Support
We know from experience that there can be a big difference in the quality of support experiences between two different people troubleshooting with the same provider. That's why we forego personal experience in favour of taking an overarching look at the number of support avenues offered by an NBN provider.
