But if you're thinking about signing up for Netflix for the first time or rejoining the service, you may be concerned that access to its unlimited movies and TV series also means a hefty monthly bill, especially after so many price hikes.
Thankfully, Netflix is still a comparatively affordable entertainment option in Australia when compared to the likes of Foxtel and it even launched a much cheaper ad-tier to cut the cost for viewers. In this guide, we have broken down what you'll pay for each Netflix subscription plan, any deals available plus what you need to know before you join up.
When Netflix launched in Australia in 2015, how much was a Standard tier plan?
How much does Netflix cost?
As of the last price hike in 2025, Netflix Australia pricing starts at $9.99 per month, however, this is for an ad-supported entry-level plan with access to movies, TV series and all Netflix games.
If you want to ditch the ads, you will need to pay an extra $11 per month for Netflix Standard. It's worth noting this is the largest price jump of any streaming service between ad-tier and ad-free. Netflix Standard costs $20.99 per month while the top plan on offer, Netflix Premium, costs $28.99 per month

Note: Extra members refers to the number of people you can have on your account who don't live at the same address as you. Each extra member slot costs an additional $6.99 per month with ads or $8.99 per month without ads.
Is Netflix cracking down on account sharing?
In short, yes Netflix is cracking down on account sharing in Australia. At the time of writing, Netflix accounts are locked to a primary location, and subscribers who want to keep sharing a password with someone living outside of said primary location will need to pay extra to do so.
How to add extra members to my Netflix account
For users sharing a password with someone else, the streaming giant suggests transferring the profile to a membership they pay for, or buying an extra member. Extra members cost $6.99 with ads or $8.99 without ads.
A single extra member can be added to a Standard Netflix account, while two extra members can be added to a Premium Netflix account. Extra members can stream at the same quality as the parent account, but only on one device at a time.
The extra member is paid for by the primary account holder, rather than being billed individually. Extra members need to reside in the same country as the primary account holder.

How to get cheap Netflix

Stan offers a wide range of content, including popular TV shows such as Outlander: Blood of my Blood, Alone, Twisted Metal and From plus Aussie originals, like Colin From Accounts, Lord of the Flies, Watching You, Totally Completely Fine, and One More Shot. Binge is Foxtel's take on a streaming service and starts at a much more affordable $10 per month (but this is with ads). However, you can save some money on its ad-free tiers if you grab a deal, such as making the most of Binge's ongoing annual discounts.
Amazon Prime Video is one of the cheapest streaming services in Australia, and while the library is not as extensive as what you'll find on Netflix, it does have a range of quality exclusive content, including The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, The Boys, The Expanse and more.
Amazon Prime Video is part of Amazon Prime, so you also get free delivery when shopping on Amazon, among a host of other perks.
If you want to watch anything Disney, Star Wars, Pixar, or Marvel, you'll need to check out Disney Plus. On top of everything animated and sci-fi, there's also content like The Bear, the Alien franchise, and Bob's Burgers to enjoy, not to mention Hulu and ESPN content.
