Just over a month after global streaming giant Disney Plus introduced ads to its subscription service, local streamer Stan has announced it will also be offering a cheaper ad-supported tier later this year.
Stan's Basic with Ads plan will launch at $9.99 per month, and offer HD streaming. It's not clear how many simultaneous streams will be offered on the Basic with Ads plan, or if there will be any other changes to existing plans. Currently, Stan Basic offers SD streaming on one device for $12 per month. When Disney officially launched its Basic with Ads plan back in April, it also raised the pricing for its ad-free plans.
Stan's parent company Nine has already dabbled with ads via its premium $20 per month Stan Sport add-on, but this is the first time regular Stan subscribers will see ad breaks on their screens. Nine's managing director of streaming and broadcast, Amanda Laing, had this to say about the introduction of ads:
“A lower-priced entry point with HD streaming broadens access to Stan and helps us reach more Australians across entertainment and live sport, while supporting continued investment in premium content and Australian storytelling.”
Stan was one of the last major streaming services in Australia to resist the inclusion of ad breaks. It now joins the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Binge, Disney Plus, Netflix, HBO Max and Paramount Plus.

Nine has confirmed that Stan will continue to offer ad-free plans alongside the new ad-supported option, but it's not clear whether changes will be coming to the existing plans. For now, Stan's ad-free plans cost $12 per month for Basic SD streaming on one device, $17 per month for HD streaming on two devices and $22 per month for 4K streaming on two devices, all with the option to add Stan Sports for an additional $20 per month.
