In cats-and-dogs-living-together news, Apple today released an Android app for Apple TV Plus. Apple already had a version of Apple TV Plus for Android TV and Google TV devices, but not for Android phones and tablets.
The Android version of Apple TV Plus is pretty much what one would expect, giving Android users access to Apple's original TV, movies, and sports programming. This includes hit shows like Severance and Mythic Quest, the Oscar-winning film CODA, and Major League Soccer (although requires an additional subscription) There's no ability to rent or buy content through iTunes, however, and any purchases one might have made on other devices aren't available in the Android app.
Notably, Apple TV on Android allows subscribing directly through Google Play. It also supports picture-in-picture viewing, foldable phone form factors, and offline downloads.
Android users have technically been able to watch Apple TV Plus via a web browser on their phone, but this certainly isn't the ideal way to stream content. Web browser experiences tend to be a lot more basic when compared to a native app, and don't have helpful features like the ability to save content for offline viewing.
While Apple launching an Android app is rare, Apple TV isn't Apple's only venture outside its walled garden. Apple Music and Apple Music Classical are also available on Android, along with a Move to iOS app and Beats companion app.
