Disney Plus has started cracking down on password sharing in Australia, with subscribers now being charged extra if they wish to share their account with someone outside of their household.
A single extra member can be added to a Disney Plus subscription for $7.99. This price is the same regardless of whether you're subscribing to a standard or premium Disney Plus plan. The extra member will get the same benefits you have. If you're paying for 4K on the premium plan, they'll get it too, for example. Extra members can only watch on one device at a time, however.
The extra member is paid for by the primary account holder, rather than being billed individually. Extra members must reside in the same country as the primary account holder. Extra members are billed monthly, even if your Disney Plus subscription is billed annually. At this stage, it doesn't look like users paying for Disney Plus through iTunes billing can add an extra member.
Alternatively, Disney Plus is now giving the primary account holder the option to move profiles to a new subscription. This means you can kick freeloaders off without them losing their viewing history.
Disney Plus users travelling away from home can still use their account, but this will require a one-time passcode that's sent to the email address associated with the account. While this could still allow account sharing, it seems like Disney is hoping this creates enough friction to get people to sign up for member accounts or their own subscriptions.
Disney Plus' decision to crack down on password sharing comes just over a year after Netflix started doing the same in Australia. Disney Plus has effectively copied Netflix's approach, down to the $7.99 per month price tag. Disney Plus following Netflix's lead isn't surprising, with the streamer adding 5.9 million subscribers just months after it started charging to share accounts.
