Another day, another dodgy email scam. This time it's Netflix Australia customers that are being targeted. Australian subscribers are receiving a phishing email that claims to require your account details.
We've seen a lot of email scams in our time, but this has got to be one of the most low-effort attempts to nab our credit card details around.
As dodgy and unconvincing as it is, the scam email that's doing the rounds is one big hyperlinked image disguised as text so clicking anywhere in the email will send to a super dodgy URL. Don't click anything in the email. Better yet, don't open it at all. Just do the good Samaritan thing and report it over at the ACCC's Scamwatch.
The email claims to be from Netflix.com.au and states that "We [they] have recently determined that different computers have logged onto your [my] Account and multiple password failures were present before the logons".
The email then warns potential scam victims that action must be taken immediately, otherwise "we [they] will be forced to suspend your [my] account indefinitely, as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes."
Bloody hell. A couple of failed logins and I'm being suspended indefinitely? That's a bit strong isn't it? And how could I use my Netflix account for fraudulent purposes? Is this because I watched Life After Porn?
The email then suggests we click a big blue button at the bottom of the email to confirm our records.
Here's subject line you will see if you're targeted: a customer support ticket ID:
According to the scammers, I'm case #54089448406. The ticket ID is a nice touch but customer support centres don't typically include a ticket number in their correspondence unless you yourself raised an issue through an online ticketing system.
Once again, if you get this email, don't click on anything and report it to Scamwatch. And if you really want to click a big blue button, why not compare broadband and mobile phone plans on WhistleOut.
