Disney Plus is expanding into sports programming with the announcement today that it will soon offer ESPN to customers in Australia and New Zealand.
ESPN will be available directly through existing Disney Plus Standard and Premium subscriptions with an ESPN hub added to Disney Plus.
This will include more than 10,000 hours of live sports programming via the ESPN and ESPN2 channels including popular shows such as SportsCenter, The Pat McAfee, NBN Today and First Take as well as live events, on-demand replays and other original programming.
ESPN holds the rights to numerous major sporting invents including the NBA All-Stars Weekend, NBL Championship Series, MLB Opening Day, the NBN Finals and the NHL Stanley Cup Final.
Disney Plus itself is the home of Walt Disney Studios content as well as Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars content, National Geographic and hits like The Simpsons.
Australia and New Zealand are the first English-speaking countries to get access to ESPN on Disney Plus outside of North America where it debuted in December 2024. It first launched in Latin America in June 2024.
The exact timing on when ESPN will arrive on Disney Plus is unknown except that it will be "in the coming months".
For now, Disney Plus' plans will remain the same price with ESPN offered through the existing subscription plans. This is the same as it works in Latin America, while in the US customers get access to a limited amount of ESPN content and then must pay for an extra subscription.
Here are Disney Plus' plans:
ESPN is currently already available in Australia via Foxtel, Kayo Sports and Fetch TV.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Foxtel will continue to be able to license ESPN content. Meaning that Disney Plus will not necessarily be the exclusive home of ESPN in Australia.
With Disney Plus' Standard plan starting at $13.99 per month, it will be one of the cheapest options in Australia to watch ESPN.
Kayo Sports' Kayo One Plan (Kayo Basic from March) costs $25 per month while Foxtel's Sports package costs $65 on a 12-month plan (price $103 per month ongoing plus) on top of hardware fees.
Fetch is more competitive with its Sports pack available for just $6 per month but you'll still need to pay at least $198 outright for a Fetch Mini 4K or $397 for a Fetch Mighty set-top box.
