- Most popular mesh WiFi system for NBN providers
- Most popular modem-router for NBN providers
- Other popular modem-routers
- Standalone provider modem-routers
If you want to get online, you're going to need an NBN-compatible modem-router, router, or mesh WiFi system. With hundreds of compatible models and potential configuration complexities, one of the more straightforward solutions is to bundle a provider-championed networking device with your NBN plan. While pretty much every NBN provider lets you bring your own (BYO) networking device, most of the ones we track in our database offer one as an optional add-on. One of the big advantages is that these networking devices tend to come preconfigured, so they're effectively plug-and-play.
Before we break down the routers, modem-router, and best mesh WiFi routers that are available as NBN plan add-ons, here's a look at popular plans from our database today.

Most popular mesh WiFi system for NBN providers
The Amazon eero 7 mesh WiFi system is the most popular add-on for the NBN providers in our database. And we get the appeal. This competitively priced dual-band WiFi 7 networking device operates well as a router and even better in a two-unit or three-unit configuration. Each eero 7 unit has two dual-sensing 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports and offers up to 5Gbps of shared WiFi speeds, making it the right fit for all NBN plans, including NBN 2000.
AGL modem-router and mesh add-ons
Sign up for an AGL NBN plan and you can pair one, two, or three Amazon eero 7 units, ranging from around $200 for one to $600+ for three. If you want more futureproofed power, grab the Amazon eero Max 7 from AGL for around $500, which is very competitively priced compared to the $1,000+ RRP. AGL also has the almost-as-popular TP-Link VX230v modem-router for around $150 as a plan add-on. Bundle any of these networking gear options with one of the AGL plans below.

Technically, an "NBN modem" is the NBN connection box that NBN Co supplies for most homes. The only exception is Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Building (FTTB) homes, both of which need a modem-router, supplied by an internet provider or sourced independently. Modem-routers should work with all other NBN technologies, but they're typically not as performative as dedicated routers or mesh WiFi systems. Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), Fixed Wireless and Sky Muster satellite homes are better off going with a router or mesh WiFi system. If you're in an FTTN or FTTB home, you can still use a router or mesh WiFi system, but you first need to put your modem-router into 'bridge' mode to make it operate exclusively as a modem.
Aussie Broadband mesh add-ons
Aussie Broadband lets its users bundle the Amazon eero 7 with any of its NBN plans. Pay under $200 for a single eero 7 unit, $350+ for two, or $500+ for three. If you have WiFi 7 devices, consider getting an Amazon eero Pro 7 mesh WiFi system via Aussie instead, with prices ranging from around $250 to $700+ for one, two, or three units. All of the Aussie Broadband plans below are compatible with either of these eero products.

For a modem-router, add the NetComm NF20MESH for around $150; alternatively, pair it with one satellite (under $300) or two satellites (around $400). But we'd still advise going with the Amazon eero 7, which costs $200 for one, just over $350 for two, or around $550 for three units. Here's a list of Tangerine NBN plans that'll work with any of these networking add-ons.

Most popular modem-router for NBN providers
Despite its age, the TP-Link VX230v is the most popular modem-router among the NBN providers in our database. Based on our time with the VX230v, that's pretty disappointing, given how the modem-router needed to be restarted every week or so to maintain uptime reliability. Still, the story on paper is a lot better: a dual-band WiFi 6 modem-router that works with all NBN technologies, with up to 1.8Gbps shared wireless speeds and four gigabit Ethernet ports. The VX230v also supports mesh expansion, which I highly recommend adding (where offered) if you're in a larger home or one prone to WiFi dead spots.
Activ8me modem-router, router, and mesh add-ons
Sign up for an Activ8me NBN plan, and you'll have the option to bundle it with the TP-Link VX230v for $150+. You can also pay under $300 for a TP-Link HX510 AX3000 as a mesh extender add-on for the VX230v. Honestly, the HX510 is so good that, if you can get it alone, grab that instead of the VX230v. Activ8me also offers the TP-Link EX511 router for under $100. Here's a look at Activ8me NBN plans from our engine that'll work with these TP-Link products.

Of the NBN providers we track in our database, dedicated routers are rarer as plan add-ons. And that makes a lot of sense. After all, a standalone mesh WiFi unit is a router, albeit one with a straightforward expansion pathway. Still, dedicated routers do tend to offer more ports than standalone mesh WiFi routers. Here are the basic specs of the dedicated routers offered by some of the NBN providers in our database:
- NetComm CF40MESH (More and Tangerine): dual-band WiFi 6; 4x 1Gbps Ethernet ports; max 1,800Mbps (shared) wireless speeds
- Xiaomi DVB4314GL (IPSTAR): dual-band WiFi 6; 3x 1Gbps Ethernet ports; max 3,200Mbps (shared) wireless speeds
- Tenda TE6L Pro (IPSTAR): dual-band WiFi 7; 3x 1Gbps Ethernet ports; max 5,100Mbps (shared) wireless speeds
- TP-Link EX511 (Activ8me): dual-band WiFi 6; 4x 1Gbps Ethernet ports; max 3,000Mbps (shared) wireless speeds
MATE modem-router and mesh add-ons
For $150+, you can pair a MATE NBN plan with the TP-Link VX230v modem-router. Alternatively, grab the superior TP-Link HB210 Pro dual-band WiFi 7 mesh WiFi system for the same price. Here's a look at MATE plans that can be bundled with either TP-Link networking device.

SpinTel modem-router add-ons
SpinTel offers the TP-Link VX230v in a few different configurations. Get it standalone for under $150; alternatively, pair it with one TP-Link HB210 extender (under $300) or two HB210s (over $400). If you don't need the VX230v modem-router for your internet or a home phone service, we advise ditching the VX230v and just sticking with one or two HB210s. Check out the SpinTel NBN plans below from our database.

Other popular modem-routers
If you want a modem-router with straightforward mesh expansion, there's the NetComm NF20MESH, but it didn't fare well in our tests. Like the TP-Link VX230v, reliability was a concern, but the on-paper specs are still decent: dual-band WiFi 6 with 1.8Gbps shared speeds, plus four gigabit Ethernet ports.
If you want 4G backup – something that's typically only associated with Optus, Vodafone, and Telstra – go for an NBN provider that offers the Arcadyan HWG2025, which has different names depending on the provider offering it. Whatever the name, the HWG2025 is a dual-band WiFi 7 modem-router with a 2.5Gbps internet port, two 1Gbps LAN ports, and optional backup internet via mobile hotspot. Then there's the Kaon DG2144, which is a dual-band WiFi 6 modem-router with 1.5Gbps shared wireless speeds, four 1Gbps LAN ports, as well as a USB and phone port.
Skymesh modem-router add-ons
Outside of More and Tangerine, Skymesh is the other NBN provider in our database that offers the NetComm NF20MESH modem-router as a plan add-on. It costs just under $250 for a standalone unit. Alternatively, Skymesh also offers the Tenda V12 as an NBN plan add-on, but we would advise against it because it's an older WiFi 5 modem-router. Below is a list of Skymesh's NBN plans that you can bundle with one of its modem-router add-ons.

TPG modem-router add-on
At the time of writing, TPG let its customers bundle an NBN plan with the TP-Link VX420-G2v, which proved to be a reliable and easy-to-use modem-router in our tests. And for just over $100, it's a modem-router add-on worth considering. Note that TPG will be offering its rebranded version of the Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Modem later in 2026. Check out TPG's NBN plans below for inspiration.

Standalone provider modem-routers
The other NBN providers in our database are either exclusively BYO NBN providers (amaysim, Exetel, and Kogan Internet) or they have other modem-routers they offer as optional plan add-ons. Because of their market share, Telstra and Optus have respective provider-branded modem-routers that are likely in high rotation. Below the popular Telstra and Optus modem-routers, we've also outlined the other modem-router models used by the remaining NBN providers we track in our database.
Telstra modem-router add-on
If you signed up for a Telstra NBN plan before August 2025, it likely came with the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which is a decent modem-router as far as our review is concerned. But from August 2025, the Telstra Smart Modem 4 is what's bundled with Telstra NBN plans, and it has max 25/5Mbps 4G backup speeds. It's a dual-band WiFi 7 modem-router with five 1Gbps Ethernet ports: four for LAN and one for internet. The Telstra Smart Modem 4 has a $0 upfront fee, but that assumes you stay with Big T for 24 months. Leave earlier and you'll need to return it to avoid a $200 hardware fee. Here's a look at Telstra NBN plans that come with the Telstra Smart Modem 4.

Optus modem-router add-on
While you can BYO networking device, Optus encourages you to bundle an NBN plan with its modem-router. The Optus Ultra Wi-Fi Modem Gen 2 costs $0 if you stay for 24 months, but you'll pay a pro rata cost of a $300+ fee for every month shy of 24 if you leave early. That's not ideal, but the specs are more impressive: dual-band WiFi 6 with 6Gbps shared WiFi speeds, four gigabit LAN, a USB port, and 25/2Mbps 4G backup if the NBN drops out. Check out these Optus NBN plans below, all of which can be paired with the Optus Ultra Wi-Fi Modem Gen 2.

IPSTAR modem-router add-ons
If you're a Sky Muster NBN user who wants a modem-router add-on, consider an IPSTAR plan. For around $100 each, you can bundle either the Xiaomi DVB4314GL router or the NuCom NC8700AC modem-router. Alternatively, futureproof your internet with a Tenda TE6L Pro router. If any of those networking devices sounds appealing, check out these IPSTAR NBN plans from our database.
